The Whipping Post Take on Noozhawk
UCSB BASEBALL SQUANDERS REGIONAL OPENER, PROVING WOKE INFRASTRUCTURE CAN'T BUILD WINNERS
In a stunning display of strategic ineptitude, UCSB's Gauchos snatched defeat from the jaws of... well, a smaller, less-equipped opponent, proving once again that focus on anything but winning leads t

It seems even Santa Barbara, a bastion of progressive thought and avocado toast, can’t escape the cold, hard reality that excellence requires, you know, being excellent. Our beloved UCSB Gauchos, those plucky lads representing the University of California-Santa Barbara, managed to bungle their way to an 11-5 loss against a school called Tarleton State in the Austin Regional opener. One can only imagine the pre-game pep talk: 'Remember, boys, participation is what truly matters,' followed by a round of kombucha and a seminar on intersectional base-running.
Noozhawk, in their ever-so-earnest reporting, highlighted the team's penchant for 'stranding 10 runners on base.' Ten runners! That’s not a baseball game; that’s a protest march that forgot its destination. Perhaps the players were too busy contemplating the systemic inequities of the batter's box or maybe they were just waiting for a safe space to advance to the next base. Whatever the reason, the result was a familiar tale of woe.
One has to wonder if the athletic department's priorities have, shall we say, 'drifted' slightly upstream from foundational sportsmanship to more, ahem, 'holistic' development. While other teams are grinding out victories, UCSB seems content to cultivate a 'well-rounded' experience that just so happens to include losing terribly. It's almost as if focusing on everything *but* the actual game leads to utterly predictable outcomes.
The real loser here isn't just the UCSB baseball team; it's the taxpayer, who no doubt foots the bill for this institutional malaise. While we’re busy funding diversity coordinators for the football team's water cooler, schools with actual grit are busy winning. Maybe it's time to re-evaluate what 'excellence' truly means in collegiate sports, beyond just having the most organic-fair-trade- ethically-sourced dugouts.
So, as the Gauchos lick their wounds, perhaps a dose of classic, unadulterated, win-at-all-costs competitive fire is in order. Or, they could always host a symposium on the psychological impact of losing, which, let's be honest, would probably be more in line with the current campus ethos.
