UCSB BASEBALL TEAM, LIKE LOCAL POLITICIANS, STRIVES FOR MEDIOCRITY, ACHIEVES IT

Our beloved Gauchos, ever consistent, lived down to expectations by fumbling their way out of the NCAA Tournament opener, proving once again that 'participation trophies' are a state of mind.

UCSB BASEBALL TEAM, LIKE LOCAL POLITICIANS, STRIVES FOR MEDIOCRITY, ACHIEVES IT

Well, folks, the Santa Barbara Independent, in its tireless pursuit of documenting every single mundane occurrence for the masses, breathlessly reported that our vaunted UCSB Gauchos baseball team managed to squander their first game in the NCAA Tournament. And not just any opponent, mind you, but the mighty *Tarleton State*. One can almost hear the collective shrug from Isla Vista as our boys in blue and gold valiantly failed to live up to any sort of actual athletic prowess when it truly mattered. Truly, a shining moment in the annals of 'almost good enough.'

This performance, frankly, mirrors the general state of affairs in our fair city and county. We gather, we discuss, we form committees, we generate reports, and then, at the crucial moment, we punt. The Gauchos' 11-5 drubbing by a university that sounds like a character from a forgotten Disney farm-animal movie is less a sporting defeat and more a metaphor for local governance. Plenty of effort, loads of tax dollars (or, in this case, student fees), yet when the rubber meets the road, we trip over our own shoelaces.

Now, the Indy’s blurb optimistically notes an 'elimination game' against Holy Cross. One can only hope that 'elimination' is less a threat and more a swift, merciful end to a season that, much like our uninspired city council meetings, will be quickly forgotten. Perhaps next year, the Gauchos can focus less on tanning at Campus Point and more on, you know, hitting a ball. Or catching one. Just a thought.

Don't worry, UCSB, your participation certificates are already being printed. And rest assured, the local media will be there to report on every last second of your glorious, underwhelming effort. Because nothing sells papers (or clicks, or whatever the Indy does these days) like local disappointment packaged as news.
