VOTER TURNOUT HITS NEW LOW: COUNTY CLERK BLAMES 'TOO MANY GOOD OPTIONS' FOR INDOCILOUS POPULACE

In news that shocked absolutely no one, especially not those of us who regularly observe the county's preferred method for solving problems (i.e., hoping someone else does it), voter turnout for the latest utterly riveting local election was, charitably, pathetic. The Santa Barbara Independent, bless its earnest heart, ran a piece practically wringing its hands over the anemic numbers, as if the citizenry might actually rouse themselves from their Pilates-and-Pinot-Noir induced stupor to, you know, vote for things.

Frankly, we're not sure what they expected. This is Santa Barbara, where the biggest civic debate usually revolves around whether the new organic kombucha bar should have outdoor seating for Fido. The idea of dedicating precious mental energy to understanding local propositions, or god forbid, the intricacies of a water board race, is simply too much to ask when one's Instagram feed demands constant curation and the surf is, like, totally gnarly, dude.

The County Elections Office, in a stunning display of bureaucratic understatement, noted the numbers were 'still pretty low.' One can almost hear the collective sigh from the poor souls tasked with counting the handful of ballots that actually dribbled in. Perhaps they should install a drive-thru ballot drop-off where you can get a chilled oat milk latte with your ballot; that might actually get a respectable showing from the local gentry.

Indeed, the only people truly invested in these elections appear to be the candidates themselves, desperately hoping their hand-painted yard signs will somehow pierce the apathy veil. It seems the average Santa Barbaran is content to let others steer the ship, so long as the organic groceries keep flowing and the ocean views remain unobstructed. Maybe next time they'll offer free Peloton memberships with every ballot; that's about the only incentive left that this city would truly understand.
