WHO CARES? KSBY CROWNS NEW 'ACADEMIC ATHLETE' IN MIND-NUMBING RITUAL
Another month, another perfectly normal, well-adjusted high schooler gets a gold star from our local news overlords for doing exactly what they're supposed to do. Riveting stuff, folks.

Well, folks, it’s that time again. The gears of institutional banality grind on, and KSBY News has once more graced us with the thrilling announcement of their 'Academic Athlete of the Month.' This month, Atascadero High’s Damon Guillen-Mitchell — and bless his heart, we’re sure he’s a fine young man — has been plucked from the teeming masses of high-achieving teenagers to bask in the warm, yet utterly bland, glow of local news recognition.
One must wonder, as the confetti settles: Is this truly newsworthy? Or perhaps, more cynically, is this just cheap content filler for a broadcast day when the biggest scandal is a squirrel getting into a bird feeder? It’s not enough to be good at sports or school anymore; one must be recognized for being good at both. Soon, we’ll have awards for 'Student Who Successfully Used a Crosswalk' or 'Teenager Who Remembered to Take Out the Trash After Being Asked Twice.' The bar for 'excellence' in our ever-so-gentle society continues its dizzying descent.
We here at The Whipping Post can’t help but picture the editorial meeting wherein this profound journalistic endeavor is hatched. 'We need more feel-good fluff!' cries the editor, 'Something that won't upset anyone, or make them think too hard!' And lo, the 'Academic Athlete' is born, a paragon of manufactured virtue designed to lull us into a docile stupor, oblivious to the fact that actual news sometimes involves actual news.
So, congratulations, Damon. May your framed certificate bring you much joy, and may the faint, distant sound of a million eyes glazing over not detract from your moment. We’re sure your mother is very proud. Now, if you’ll excuse us, we have to go check if anyone won the 'Local Resident Who Paid Their Property Taxes On Time' award yet.
This monthly ritual, while harmless on the surface, perfectly encapsulates the risk-averse, thought-numbingly earnest provincialism that often passes for local journalism. It’s not just a story; it’s a symptom.
